LSE Kick-Off Party

The LSE Kick-Off party was such a joy to experience. As soon as I entered Sedgewick Studios, I was greeted by some good friends. The room was a bustle of energy and laughing and enjoying the drinks and eats that were generously donated by restaurants and bars in 43rd and 44th wards.

Each of the artists' maquette was on display with an individualized postcard designed by Eric Craig. He also produced brochures and posters available to attendees. He also produced a video compilation (this was projected up on the wall) of all the installations. He did a great job and I am excited to get my copy of the DVD. I will post images of these when I get them. It was really cute to have the children come up to me and ask for my autograph on their posters! Even some adults asked for it -- which is a new thing for me.... autographs?!

Barb Guttman, Alderman Vi Daley's right hand woman, let me know that the sponsor of my piece was excited to meet me. Position is located on a plot of land beside his home that he generously renovated making a very nice public space for the neighborhood to enjoy. He greeted me with a kind smile and disbelief that I was female. Judging from my name, he anticipated a male. We had a nice conversation and I hope to know him better.

Then, we all were called up to the front of the studio to be introduced and then to introduce our sculpture and inform the crowd of its location. It was awesome to be included in this group with such talented people. I didn't know I would have to speak, but luckily it was short and to the point.

I met a lot of new faces and new artists and art lovers. I met art professors and was even invited to speak at his class. I had some good conversation around linking artists and city government to open up more spaces for public art. I hope to be involved in making that a reality. All the other wards would truly benefit by having public art. I am still excited to be part of this exhibit and hope to be in the many years to come!
